The Maldives national football team has officially intensified preparations for the upcoming Diamond Jubilee International Football Tournament, a special four-nation competition set to celebrate 75 years of football in the Maldives. The tournament, scheduled to take place in Malé from June 1 to June 10, has already generated major excitement among local football fans as the country prepares to welcome regional competition back to the National Football Stadium.
The four participating nations for the invitational tournament are expected to be the Maldives, Bangladesh, Pakistan, and Afghanistan after changes to the original lineup ahead of the competition. The event is also seen as an important preparation tournament for teams ahead of future South Asian competitions, including the SAFF Championship.
Under head coach István Urbányi, the Maldives have already begun intense training sessions focused on tactical discipline, fitness, pressing systems, and rebuilding the national team’s competitive identity.
Urbányi, who returned earlier this year for his third spell with Maldivian football, has repeatedly emphasized the importance of long-term development while also aiming to create a strong and aggressive style of play for the Red Snappers.
Training sessions in Malé have reportedly carried a renewed level of energy and competitiveness, with experienced senior players training alongside several younger prospects who impressed during recent youth tournaments. Supporters have also shown growing excitement surrounding the squad, especially with the return of familiar national team figures combined with the emergence of the country’s next generation of talent.
The preliminary squad selected by Urbányi includes a mixture of experienced stars and promising youngsters. Among the notable names included are veteran forward Ali Ashfaq, attacker Ali Fasir, midfielder Amdhan Ali, and rising youngsters such as Ethan Ibrahim Zaki, Mohamed Ilan Imran, alongside several players who recently featured in the SAFF U-20 Championship.
